Manager on Wednesday
Wednesday, 20th Jun 2018“He is not the biggest player in the world but he has got pace to get by people.
Allan Johnston revealed today that he has been tracking his new signing Aidan Connolly for a long time:-
“We needed somebody who could play in a couple of different positions. He has got the skill, he is creative, he can score goals so I’m sure that he can play a big part this year.
“We spoke about him last year as well and even in January we were maybe going to bring him in as well, so it has taken a bit of time.
“He was at Dundee United and he was somebody I liked when he was just breaking through there. Jackie (McNamara) had him at York and speaks really highly of him. He says that he has had a fantastic season and obviously we have done our research on him as well so it is always good when you are getting back reports like that.
“Jackie has seen him every day and knows the quality that he has got although he is somebody I have admired as well. I have seen him play and like the way he plays. He gives us something different.
“He is not the biggest player in the world but he has got pace to get by people. He can see the pass and you are always looking for creative players.
“He doesn’t mind where he plays, right left or in behind the strikers so it gives us that wee bit of flexibility. And obviously a bit of pace as well. It is up to him now to go and make sure that he is on the starting eleven.
“You hope that we will get the fans excited because he is creative and skilful. They want to be entertained so when you are signing boys like that hopefully they can do that.”
The manager acknowledged that games in England are of a different kind but he is sure that his signing will have improved with his experiences down south and will be more physical. AJ added that he was still looking for more players.
“We are trying to bring in strikers. Everybody is looking for strikers and it does take a bit of time to get the quality that you are looking for.
“We have a few options, Louis Longridge can play upfront. He played up there with Falkirk last year and he has played there with Hamilton. We have Andy Ryan, we have Calum Smith so it is not as though we are in a desperate rush to bring in strikers but it is an area that we are looking to try and strengthen.
“We are pretty strong I think in the majority of positions. You are just looking for that wee bit of quality to try and improve us as well. Obviously it is a big change, there are a lot of people been brought in but I’m sure that we will hit the ground running.
“We had a lot of people out of contract so there was every possibility that there would be a big turnover that is why throughout the season you are assessing players at different clubs. You don’t always get your first choices, it takes time and people are obviously assessing their options as well.”
