Scottish football an education for Beadling

Sunday, 4th Feb 2018

“I need to improve my game in some areas, be a bit smarter in others. It is quicker, more intelligent and you have to be streetwise.

Tom Beadling scored on his Dunfermline Athletic debut against Morton on Saturday but letting in two goals after he had put his side ahead took the shine off that. That was the feeling of the new boy who told this website:-

“It doesn’t really mean much at the end of the day. We have come away without any points and the lads are just devastated. With the chances that we had we probably should have put the game to bed.

“We should have been coming away with three points but we are not. We lost some sloppy goals and missed chances. Both ends of the pitch we need to work on.”

Tom was oblivious to the continuing habit that Dunfermline have against Morton this season of losing to late goals.

“That is something that we need to work on. Three times is not good.”

The 22 year old who joined on loan from Sunderland on Tuesday was played in the centre of midfield and he said that suited him:-

“I like playing that role and feel that I can score some goals in that role. I had some chances and scored one goal. I helped out defensively and I like doing both ends of the pitch.”

After 90 minutes of Scottish football Tom felt that he had a lot to learn about the game north of the border:-

“I need to improve my game in some areas, be a bit smarter in others. It is quicker, more intelligent and you have to be streetwise. You have got to look after yourself and it is a different tempo. It is a lot quicker and I have got to get used to that quickly.”

During the match the Pars bench could be heard shouting instructions for Tom to get closer to Morton’s key player Gary Harkins. He had been a player highlighted to Tom as one to watch.

“I heard about him before the game that he is a good player and he proved that. He has quality, a tough opponent and something to learn from.

“I even learnt a lot from my first start but I need to learn quickly. I will work hard on my game. Watch the game back see what I did well and what I didn’t and then go from there.”

Born in Barrow, Tom is joined by seven Englishman in the Dunfermline squad even without counting Geordie, Callum Morris who claims eligibility for Northern Ireland.

“There are quite a few but to be fair all the lads have been brilliant and welcomed us new lads in very well.”
