Lewis laments flat Irn Bru performance

Sunday, 8th Oct 2017

"We didn`t get our passing going as good as we can and our heads went down a bit.

Dunfermline defender, Lewis Martin lives within five minutes of the Falkirk Stadium and defeat to the Bairns on Saturday was particularly hard for him to take. He fears that he may have to keep his head down until the Pars get another crack at their fierce rivals on 4th November in the Ladbrokes Championship. He gave his assessment of the cup tie:-

"A few of my friends who are Falkirk fans will have been at the game. I will get a bit of stick when out and about but I will just have to deal with it.

"Falkirk got the goal from a corner and we just couldn`t get back in it. We were second to second balls most of the time. We didn`t get our passing going as good as we can and our heads went down a bit.

"We are obviously disappointed because as a team we know that we can do far better than that."

Lewis was up against a Falkirk attack that looked lively and dangerous in front of their own support but the Pars man added:-

"I don`t think they are any better than the players we have got. We just didn`t put enough pressure on their back four and they put a good amount of pressure on our back four and got the benefits from it."

The Falkirk match was just his tenth appearances of the season. The 21 year old continued:-

"My last start was in this cup against Buckie and I played the second half of the Morton game. That has been it. It has been a frustrating time but I just have to keep working hard in training and try to get my chance when I can. Hopefully when I do get my chance that I do stay in the team.

"My preference is centre back and I like playing there better than at full back but if I`m needed to play there then I am happy enough to do it."

Turning to the team Lewis feels that they need not feel too down at the reversal in the last two matches, he claimed:-

"We know that we have not played so well in our last two games. We will be working hard in training this week and with the players we have got, we know we can turn it around just as easy."

Lewis` starting place was in the right back berth vacated by Ryan Williamson who was away on international duty. He watched Ryan`s international debut for Scotland U21s versus England on live television on Friday night and commented:-

"He made one tackle! But he came on in right midfield and it is a hard game against England. When they got the goal I thought they would get back in it but England scored straight away and it wasn`t the best of nights for him."

Lewis was capped four times for Scotland U19s and while Ryan was part of that Ricky Sbragia international squad he never gained a cap. So his team mate was very pleased for him and added:

"Ryan has been brilliant all season and deserved to get called in to the Scotland squad."
