Dunfermline Athletic

Talbot signs on

Thursday, 1st Jun 2017

On signing a new contract Jason Talbot said:- "where we finished last season was quite respectable and that is a stepping stone to where we want to go next season.

Allan Johnston`s first signing as manager of Dunfermline Athletic has signed a new one-year deal to stay at East End Park until May 2018.

Jason Talbot joined initially on one-year contract in June 2015 and has had that extended for a second time.

The defender who scored one goal in 38 games throughout the 2016–17 Ladbrokes Championship campaign, he told the website after completing the paperwork on Thursday morning, that the gaffer had said all along that he was in his plans. Jason said:-

"Obviously he has his priorities which is understandable - you have to build your squad the way your gaffer wants it. I went away and enjoyed a break with my family which was nice. When I came back the offer was there and I took it straight away."

"There wasn`t much deciding to do, I wanted to stay and that was it. I stated towards the tail end of last season that I wanted to stay, I have not finished with Dunfermline by a long shot, I think I can give more and I want to give more to the club. So I am happy to be part of next season.

"I`ll just get on with my job, that is what I am paid to do. If I can be consistently good every week that is what I aim to be."

Jason expanded on that "not finished with Dunfermline" comment:-

"Hopefully we can win promotion. We gave ourselves a massive push from the middle of the year onwards and we showed what we are more than capable of doing. Hopefully we can build a great squad, build a couple of players round it and push for promotion next season. Pushing for promotion would be fantastic."

That might not be so easy with relegated Inverness Caley Thistle now in the mix and both Falkirk and Dundee United still there too. Jason predicted that next season`s Championship will be more open:-

"Hibs with a bigger budget and a bigger squad were always going to be favourites and rightly so. They didn`t run away with the league but they were comfortable to a point where they got promoted quite easily. This season coming will be a much more open contest.

"I think everyone will be on similar budgets with similar squads so it will be a good league. How well we do will all depend on starting well. Last season we did not start the season well. We did not pick up many points but if we can pick up as many points as we can it will be good for us."

"If we had done that last season we could have been in the play offs. There were games where we dropped points when we should have won, the likes of against Ayr.

"Where we finished last season was quite respectable and that is a stepping stone to where we want to go next season. Keeping the nucleus of the team that we have got can only bode well for the season that we can have. I think it is going to be fantastic, I am excited to be part of it and excited to be part of Dunfermline once again."
