DUNFERMLINE 3 MOTHERWELL 1
The Dunfermline second XI gave a fine demonstration of goal scoring as the squad players staked their claim for a place in the starting line up for Saturday`s SPL basement show down against St Mirren.
The visitors found themselves one down in just ten minutes with virtually the first attempt of the match. A move down the right switched the ball to the back post where Scott MUIRHEAD brought it down and struck an unstoppable shot into the top right from 12 yards without keeper Alan Martin moving.
Midway through the first half a fine move again down the right with Bobby Ryan setting up Aaron Labonte to deliver an inviting ball into the `Well penalty box but Iain Williamson`s shot was saved by the keeper.
Motherwell then had their best chance of the half after Calum Woods had lost possession to allow Steven McGarry to break down the right wing but no one could get contact on his cross through the Pars box.
In 27th minute Tam McManus tested Martin but it took until 43 minutes until Dunfermline increased their lead. A sweet exchange between Woods and Muirhead saw the latter release a nice cross that Jim McINTYRE headed beyond the keeper from 8 yards as he arrived at the near post.
The second half played in blustery conditions was more end to end with the Lanarkshire side trimming the Fifers lead after 57 minutes. Labonte was forced to concede a free kick and from that Kevin McBride setpiece, Willie Kinninburgh headed the ball back across goal to be turned in by Paul KEEGAN from six yard.
Dunfermline continued to create openings with Williamson going narrowly wide with his effort from a Ryan cross and then McIntyre`s penalty claim for an impediment in the box being waved away by referee Steven Crichton.
In 70 minutes a useful Muirhead ball in from the left was well defended, as was Bamba`s header from the resulting corner with Martin turning the on target header round the post.
It was nine minutes from the end before Iain WILLIAMSON put the result beyond doubt. Having won the ball on halfway the 19 year old played a neat 1-2 with McManus that took him into the opposition penalty box and through on goal. The youngster cooly slid the ball into the net as Martin advanced towards him.
