cinch Reserve League Cup: Kane Ritchie-Hosler started. Dunfermline won 5-3 on penalties

- - Hear Greg Shields post match thoughts

This was the second fixture in the cinch Reserve Cup which is being contested by twelve clubs in two groups of six games. Other teams in the group are Dundee, Hibernian, Queens Park and Livingston who the Pars defeated 2-1 last month.

Kyle Macdonald captained the reserve team which included Kane Ritchie-Hosler on loan from Rangers and Miller Fenton who was eligible although currently on loan to Berwick Rangers.

Archie Meekison and Sadat Anaku were the two Dundee United starters who had featured most in the first team this season.

Macdonald created the early threat with good crosses into the United box from the right side while the visitors had an early glancing header wide of target from Sadat and an important block on his seventh minute shot.

As the match progressed the Premierleague club enjoyed much of the territorial advantage with the Pars restricted to the occasional break forward. Mathew Cudjoe hit a shot into the McCathie Stand but home keeper Max Little had no more to do than Jack Newman in the opposing goal.

A snapshot from distance from Andrew Tod in 27th minute was deflected for a corner on the right. Macdonald’s delivery travelled to Tod on the far side and his return was narrowly missed by players on both sides.

Seven minutes later Archie Meekison squeezed a good ball into the Pats box that Sadat chested down but blasted his shot over the bar. Next minute Meekison supplied Cudjoe is a good opportunity on the edge of the box but he fired his effort wildly wide right.

Ritchie-Hosler teed up Macdonald for a 39th minute shot that went out beyond the far post. Next Cudjoe was able to fire an on target effort that bounced awkwardly in front of Little but the big keeper managed to touch the ball away for a corner on the left. When the corner came over it was Ritchie-Hosler who headed clear.

Half time: Dunfermline 0 Dundee United 0

Dundee United made two substitutions before the second half got going with Bryan Mwangi and Kai Fotheringham replacing Sadat and Pawlett.

Taylor Sutherland did well deep down the right side to deliver a 52nd minute cross that Newman cut out at full stretch to deny Rennie a tap in. That was his last chance as he was then subbed for Jake Sutherland. Macdonald exchanged passes with Tod before rifling a 58th minute shot that Newman held.

United had a golden chance in 69 minutes after Cudjoe had drawn his marker on the left side and found Fotheringham in front of goal but remarkably he sent his shot wide left. Macdonald earned a 72nd minute corner and he sent that short to T Sutherland but the defence dealt with his cross.

Sub Stuart McDowell played in a good early cross that was just intercepted before it reached J Sutherland. Then next minute, 80th McDowell got in a shot from the edge of the box that Newman held.

Pars keeper Little plucked out a crossed ball from an 86th minute United corner. McDowell got another opportunity to have a crack at goal but his effort two minutes from full time sneaked over the bar.

With the match ending all square penalties decided the bonus point. Max Little v Jack Newman but it turned out a blast over the crossbar was the difference. Dunfermline picked up the bonus point to top the table after two matches.
