Queen of the South 1 Dunfermline 0
Saturday, 27th Feb 2021Scottish Championship: Four changes in starting eleven. Declan McManus penalty saved (11). Willie Gibson (50) 1-0:
Queen of the South sit six points behind Dunfermline but it was still fourth v second when the sides met for the second time this season. With just one away win in the league Stevie Crawford was encouraging his players to take their home form on the road. Home manager, Allan Johnston was hoping Queens could make it five home games without defeat.
Kyle Macdonald, Steven Whittaker, Kerr McInroy and Dom Thomas came into the Pars starting eleven in place of the injured Aaron Comrie and Euan Murray, with Iain Wilson and Scott Banks. Kyle Turner returned to the Pars bench where there was also the first sight of Lithuanian internationalist Vytas Gašpuitis.
Queen of the South made one change bringing in former Par Rhys McCabe. The Pars in their red away strip emerged from beneath the sun kissed North Stand and it was Declan McManus who kicked off with the visitors attacking the goal at the open end.
Dunfermline were on the attack from the off with Macdonald forward to supply McManus with the opportunity for a third minute cross from the right that was cut out. Next minute Thomas cut inside from the right and got away a shot from 20 yards but a deflection took the sting out of it and keeper Rohan Ferguson gathered.
Queens first real foray in nine minutes was punctuated by an over hit cross from Willie Gibson. When play switched to the other end Craig Wighton was upended by James Maxwell right in front of goal and referee Mike Roncone pointed to the spot. McManus took responsibility for the 11th minute penalty but fired low to the right and Ferguson went the right way to save.
Five minutes later when McInroy fouled Gibson, McCabe floated in a free kick from 40 yards out that Gregor Buchanan headed down but the offside flag was raised.
It had been all Dunfermline with Ayo Obileye clearing a good cross in from McInroy but then in 21 minutes Isaiah Jones got a chance to jink around his marker deep on the left side and released a cross that Owain Fôn Williams had to save to prevent a goal.
Whittaker did well to head clear another McCabe free kick given after Lewis Mayo had collected the first yellow card of the afternoon for his challenge on Niyah Joseph. Whittaker was next to be shown yellow as he halted Jones in his own half.
Thomas forced the first Pars corner in 38 minutes and there was a delay as the referee spoke to Watson and Obileye. When Thomas delivered, Gibson conceded another on the left and this time Mayo met Murray’s cross but directed the ball wide left. Back at the other end Williams saved brilliantly from a blast of a shot from Obileye after Jones had got to the left byeline.
Three minutes from the break Josh Edwards provided McManus with the opportunity to fire at goal from 15 yards out but the ball escaped wide right. Then right on half time Mayo had to block a Joseph shot and McManus had to head away the corner sent in from the left by McCabe.
Dunfermline had enjoyed 66% possession in the first half but had not managed to find the Queens net even from the penalty spot.
Half time: Queen of the South 0 Dunfermline 0
Just over a minute into the second half Whittaker latched on to a Wighton knock down but his low right footed shot from the edge of the box went wide left. Then in 48 minutes McInroy took a snap shot from 25 yards out that again went the wrong side of the left upright.
The hosts were to take the lead in 50 minutes. Jones provided the trickery on the left and although Watson blocked the on loan Middlesbrough player’s shot the ball fell nicely to Willie GIBSON and he crashed his 20 yard effort into the Dunfermline net. 1-0
Queens had more chances when Maxwell made a solo run and then when sub Dapo Mebude flashed the ball across the box and wide left. Edwards made his former Airdrie team mate Rohan Ferguson save at his near post before midway through the second half two Dunfermline subs were introduced- Iain Wilson and Kevin O’Hara replacing Steven Whittaker and Declan McManus.
Macdonald’s cross was turned behind by Ferguson but newly introduced sub Scott Banks 75th minute corner was easily defended. Next Edwards got into the Queens box but when receiving the switched pass from McInroy he was deemed to have been offside.
With seven minutes remaining Banks picked out O’Hara on the left side of the Queens box but the striker’s net bound shot was blocked. Dunfermline had plenty possession and were persistent in attack but with six men strung across the back the home side were hanging on for a result. As time ran out Murray’s shot was deflected and Ferguson held.
Then in the 90th minute Mayo brought down fellow Rangers player Mebude and his second yellow card meant that the Fifers would end the game with ten men. Dunfermline were left to puzzle how with so much possession and good play they failed to take any points home.

The opening goal came in just the tenth minute. Dunfermline lost possession in the Queens half, Daniel Pybus hoofed the ball up the right wing where Dobbie latched on to it, wrong footed Lee Ashcroft and then allowed Gary OLIVER to pounce on the chance on edge of the box. Taking the ball right his low angled shot found the net just inside the left upright. 1-0
The travelling support only had to wait four minutes for an equaliser. Thomas took a corner on the right short to Ryan Dow. Afolabi met the cross heading the ball on to the crossbar and Gabby McGILL followed up to head the ball over the line. The first senior goal for the nineteen year old made it 1-1.
On the stroke of half time Lyon headed the ball behind for a Dunfermline corner on the left. Thomas quickly lined up his delivery as the centre backs and Euan Murray went up. When the ball was whipped over Danny DEVINE met the cross and glanced his header in at the near post. Super finish 1-2.
On the hour Dobbie went over Ashcroft as he tried to defend the ball on the right side of the Pars box. Referee Craig Napier pointed to the spot and DOBBIE tucked the penalty. 2-2.
Thomas had an effort from the left corner of the Queens box deflected behind for an 82nd minute corner on the right. This time when Thomas delivered ASHCROFT fought off Holt to meet the ball with a forceful header that bulged the net. 2-3

Dunfermline have won two and drawn two of their last six but have lost just two of their last ten matches. Away from home they have managed just one victory and that is something that Stevie Crawford wants to improve on.
Queen of the South have had a season of two halves. Prior to Christmas they had played twelve games and won only twice, against Queens Park in the Betfred Cup and at home to Alloa. Since Christmas their form is in complete contrast with six wins and two draws from ten games.
