It was a young side that took on Lowland League, Kelty Hearts at New Central Park on Friday night. The starting eleven included two young trialists - Jack Ogilvie (7) and Kyle Sampson (11). There were another three trialists on the subs bench.
Kelty Hearts, East of Scotland league champions, fielded former Par Stephen Husband and it was them who kicked off attacking the goal at the north end. First showing was a strong run by Ogilvie and the Kelty keeper Scott Christie had to make a good save from Lewis Crosbie within three minutes.
Unfortunately within that period Matthew Todd was forced off after just 90 seconds with what looked like a hamstring problem. Paul Brown was then the first sub used taking up the vacated midfield role in fourth minute.
Three minutes later, the home side took an early lead after Ross Philp fired a good effort on target, Pars stopper Craig Burt parried the ball away to his right but Willis HARE netted the loose ball. 1-0
Kelty increased their advantage in 16 minutes from a free kick in a central position 35 yards out. Husband swept the ball to the top of the Pars box and his delivery was beautifully met by the head of Mathew GAY and his header dropped into the far side of the net. 2-0
When Scott Taylor McKenzie fired a shot on target from 25 yards out Burt made a fine save, turning it round his left hand post for a 21 minute corner. McKenzie crossed the ball into the six yard box and in a scramble HARE managed to net his second of the evening. 3-0
Things looked better for Dunfermline when they linked up some passes and in 32 minutes Gregor Jordan found Brandon Luke in a central position. He placed the ball at the feet of Crosbie and he took off to crash a shot on target but the keeper saved.
Four minutes later Paul Allan took responsibility at a free kick 28 yards out. His shot hit the four man wall and rebounded for Luke to get in a shot but the keeper held. The visitors were able to get higher up the pitch as half time approached. Josh Robertson’s run earned a corner on the left but that was defended.
Half time: Kelty Hearts 3 Dunfermline 0
Kelty made one change as the sun came out at the start of the second half, Archie Roue replaced Brian Ritchie. Burt was the first keeper called into action holding a dangerous cross from Philp. A 51 minutes free kick was lofted in by Allan but Stuart Morrison couldn’t get his header in at the far post.
Two minutes later a neat backheeler from Sampson set up Jack OGILVIE to get a goal back. The trialist took the ball right before slotting it past Christie. 3-1
The goal gave the Pars a lift and they worried Kelty again when Allan’s rocket from outside the box was spectacularly saved by Christie and then Brown’s follow up was also blocked out. In 60 minutes Allan pumped another free kick in search of Morrison on the far left of the Kelty box but the defence won the ball. Jordan did successfully get on the end of the next Allan free kick played in from the right but he directed the ball wide right.
Kieran Swanson came on in 62 minutes, Brandon Luke going off. Stuart Morrison took over the armband but it was not long before Kelty found the net again. Sub Stuart Cargill timed his run well to glance in from a Husband corner from the left at the near post. 4-1
There was a chance for Dunfermline to claw a goal back when Ogilvie was taken down in the box. He picked up the ball and took charge of the spot kick but the keeper right the correct way to deny a second.
In 79 minutes Stephen HUSBAND produced one of his special free kicks giving Burt no chance from the 30 yard out setpiece. 5-1
