MOTHERWELL 4 DUNFERMLINE 0
Dunfermline travelled to the Excelsior Stadium on Monday night to face second placed Motherwell in the Development League. Ben Richards-Everton and Callum Fordyce formed the central defence, playing together again for the first time since the Championship match at Easter Road in August. Nat Wedderburn started in midfield and David Hopkirk led the attack alongside 16 year old Callum Smith.
The Premiership club kicked off attacking the goal at the south end and created a threat in the second minute when Barry Maguire intercepted a pass from Reece Duncan to Nat Wedderburn in the Motherwell half. Fortunately the Pars defence dealt with the break.
The first shot of any kind came in sixth minute after Duncan had made ground up the right and got a cross in that David Hopkirk hit at the keeper from 20 yards out.
David Hutton tipped away the first corner of the night that Motherwell swing in dangerously from the left. Play got bogged down a bit in the central of the park but on 20 minutes Ross McLean sent Jack McMillan away down the right and it was fortunate that no one could get on to the delivery through the penalty box.
The Pars had the opportunity to pump a free kick into the six yard box from the left touch line but Hopkirk`s ball was met first by a `Well boot. Hutton was then called upon to push away a fierce effort from Jake Hastie who had avoided offside as he burst on to the ball on the left and shot from the edge of the box.
After Brandon Luke was fouled Hopkirk got a chance to try and hit the target from a 32nd minute free kick 25 yards out but he curled his attempt over the crossbar. Two minutes later it was Motherwell`s free kick midway inside the Fifers half that allowed Tom Fry to lob danger into the Pars box but Hutton was out to hold.
Nine minutes from the break McLean connected well with a Motherwell chance but sent his shot from 25 yards out narrowly wide left. In 39 minutes Hopkirk sped away from his man, played the ball off Smith on the top of the D before releasing a shot that must have stung the Well defender who made the block.
Hutton dived to his right to pull off a fine save from the yellow booted Hastie, the ball spun right and when that was cut back for Maguire he blasted the chance over the bar. Hutton was the busier keeper and he next held Fry`s cross from the right.
Half time: Motherwell 0 Dunfermline 0
When Richards-Everton conceded a rather soft penalty out on the right side of his box in just the sixth minute of the second half, it handed Motherwell the opportunity to go ahead. David Hutton saved Dylan MACKIN`s first attempt but when the ball spin up the big well no.9 headed home. 1-0
A break out of defence just five minutes later led to a second `Well goal. Again there was an element of fortune that favoured the Lanarkshire side a cross ball coming off the back of Duthie to set up MACKIN who drove home from 25 yards. 2-0
Luck was not in the Fifers favour as Duthie swing the ball in from the left wing, the keeper dropped it but no Pars player was there to take advantage. A deflection saved Motherwell in 66 minutes when Hopkirk dispatched a good effort on target from the edge of the box. Morrison rode to take out Scott Lochhead`s corner.
A display of short sharp passing punctuated with a fine ball from McLean for HASTIE on the left side of the box set up a third Motherwell goal in 73 minutes. 3-0
The home side made a couple of substitutions and Falconer almost made an immediate impact but his shot was blocked. Seven minutes from the end the Steelmen swept forward again and McLean was again allowed to send the ball into the six yard box where MACKIN completed his hattrick with a rudimentary header. 4-0
The two Pars subs created a final shooting chance in 89th minute, Johnny Galloway finding Robbie Crawford on the edge of the box but the shot was wayward.
