The U20s took on Inverness Caley Thistle on Tuesday night and it turned out to be their poorest match of their season so far. The visitors were first to test the goalkeeper with striker Adam Evans travelling into the left side of the penalty box to belt a shot on target from the angle but Ryan Goodfellow held. Then he had to be alert in fifth minute when Evans` cross from the left touchline was heading goalwards.
Dunferrmline`s 12th minute corner delivered from the right by skipper Scott Mercer found the head of Kerr Young at the back post but he directed the ball wide. The visitors went up the park and Evans forced a corner on the left and when that was lobbed into the six yard box Danny DEVINE rose to head the ball into the Pars net. 0-1
The Highlanders produced the better play and looked dangerous every time they swept forward. Nevertheless Ryan Williamson and Allan Smith both had promising runs that might have provided opportunities for the Pars. Smith`s final pass found no one in front of goal and after Williamson had fed Smith his shot was blocked.
On the half hour Evans created more problems for the Fifers defence and they were happy to clear over the bar and let Wiliamson get away the subsequent corner. The ball was sent over the bar at the other end three minutes later when Fayssal El Bakhtaoui laid a chance off to Mercer.
Before the break Goodfellow kept out Evans again, Kerr Young blocked a Ryan Christie effort and then Lewis Martin denied Marley Watkins.
An Inverness goal just five minutes into the second half made the task even tougher for the home side. The second goal being conceded at another corner, this time the scorer was WATKINS.
Smith was put through and got a shot in but alas high before his fellow borderer Goodfellow had to pull off a double save. On 59 minutes Williamson provided Smith with another opportunity but his shot was cleared on the goalline by an opposing defender.
Dunfermline had further opportunities but the best were late on. In 81 minutes neat stuff between subs Scott Gray and Gavin McMillan set up Smith but he could only earn a corner that Young headed over the bar.
Two minutes later Williamson went on another surging run that forced another corner that was met by another Young header that dropped to Gray. The keeper spun the ball into the air and when Martin clashed with a defender in an attempt to head the ball, the Pars player sustained a broken nose so with all three subs already played, Dunfermline played out the remainder of the game with just ten men.
Caley sub Calum FERGUSON notched a third goal for the visitors in 87 minutes - a breakaway that he shot low to Goodfellow`s right. A sad end to a disappointing night.
