Dunfermline U20s travelled to Hamilton on Tuesday afternoon two days after winning their SFA Youth Cup Semi Final over St Mirren. Coach John Potter made several changes with Andy Ritchie, Jack Bruce, Lewis Spence, Finn Graham, Declan O`Kane and Ross Drummond coming into the team. Hamilton started with five players with first team experience.
It was an exciting game in which Dunfermline`s changed team played really well. The visitors went ahead in ten minutes after Blair HENDERSON followed up a Lewis Martin shot that rebounded off the crossbar. The lead lasted only one minute before Hamilton equalised. Ryan Goodfellow then tipped a Hamilton shot over his bar and at the other end Chris Shaw saved from Scott Gray.
Both sides had the ball in the net but it was offside in both cases. The Pars went 2-1 ahead in 33 minutes when HENDERSON took advantage of a poor clearance by Shaw. The Pars striker won the ball and ran in to score.
Half Time: Hamilton Accies 1 Dunfermline 2
Hamilton had the better of the opening exchanges in the second half though Declan O`Kane had a good attempt from distance. For the Fifers 15 year old Gavin Paterson replaced Ross Drummond and Hamilton made a double substitution immediately before getting back level on 72 minutes.
O`KANE restored the lead two minutes later. Henderson`s skills on the edge of the box set up his team mate to make it 3-2 to Dunfermline. However yet again the lead was to be surrendered with a Hamilton strike 11 minutes from the end.
Dunfermline finished the game with four 17 year olds, two 16 year olds and a 15 year old on the park. John Potter felt that it was a good learning experience for them:-
"We scored good goals, big Blair and Grant Munro were excellent as the older ones. Those around about them did well so I was pleased. The goals they got included two mistakes from us, Hamilton did have a lot of the ball in the second half but I thought we worked very hard to deny opportunities."
