Celtic`s victory over Dunfermline at Stirling University on Tuesday afternoon took them to the top of the SPL Under-19 League and now need just one win from their last three games to clinch the title. Pars coach Hamish French thought it was a good game against a Celtic side who had good players in all areas of the park.
"We competed well and in the first half in was just two setpieces that let us down. We didn`t trouble their goalie enough but we tried to get up the park, tried to keep possession. That was good to see.
John Herron nets the earlier opener
"Celtic got a lot of confidence but I thought we matched them. We didn`t give them that many clear cut opportunities either. Celtic are the benchmark but we kept going to the end and were unlucky to lose a goal from a deflection in the last minute.
"Their goalie had a couple of good saves late on and had we scored it might have been a better reflection of the second half. We are not too disappointed."
Two early goals from John Herron and Paul George put Celtic two ahead within the first quarter of an hour. Tony Watt extended their lead shortly before the break and Callum McGregor rounded off the victory in added time after Ryan Goodfellow had made a save from Curtis Jones.
Dunfermline had two or three good efforts in the second half. In 66 minutes Jack Bruce picked out Blair Henderson, Allan Smith got involved before Scott Mercer had a shot blocked. Two minutes later Bruce again crossed for Shaun Byrne and Henderson set up Smith for a shot that was well defended. Late on Ross Drummond crossed for Smith to turn and he severely tested Fusan in the Celtic goal.
