2-1 down at half time and only on the scoresheet because of an own goal it might appear to have been a game of two halves but Dunfermline always held the upper hand in this friendly played at Broughton High School on Thursday night. Fraser Moncrieff had scored a brace in the 19s 5-0 win over Craigroyston just two nights previously but when he came on for the second half he led a rout with a personal tally of five.
The first half was one where the Pars were well on top. Chris Hackland rounded keeper Ian McTurk in the opening minutes but his shot rolled across goal and wide right. Scott Mercer hit the post after four minutes. Three minutes later Hackland was chopped down on the edge of the box and Ross Drummond`s free kick was headed over the bar by Blair Henderson.
Spartans went ahead however when their no.11 chipped Ryan Goodfellow and although the keeper got a touch he couldn`t prevent the ball dropping under his crossbar. Midfielder Lewis Barr then had two good efforts that kept the former Pars youth keeper, McTurk, on his toes. Dunfermline deserved something for their supremacy and in 32 minutes they pressed a Spartans defender to send a well struck pass back beyond his keeper.
A mistake in defence allowed the Spartans number 9 the opportunity to crash the ball past Goodfellow in 43 minutes and the home side should have changed ends 3-1 up but when the same player had another great chance he shot narrowly wide.
Half Time: Spartans 2 Dunfermline 1
Sixteen year old Fraser MONCRIEFF replaced Chris Hackland at half time and after Henderson had hit the crossbar, it was the sub who accepted a fairly soft goal after Drummond had sent the ball in from the left. Henderson`s bad luck continued in 54 minutes when he did really well to beat the last man but when one on one with the keeper hit it straight at him.
Five minutes later, however, Drummond created more bedlam on the left side and his delivery was converted by MONCRIEFF to put the Fifers ahead for the first time. HENDERSON did then find the net in 66 minutes with a solo attack on the home defence.
MONCRIEFF completed his hat-trick four minutes later after pouncing on a Henderson flick on. 5-2 up Dunfermline were coasting and it became six just six minutes later. Mercer flighted in a free kick from the left and Kerr YOUNG rose high above everybody else to score.
Young met an 83rd minute corner at the far post and that predator MONCRIEFFwas handy to make it 7-2. Next minute Byrne was through on goal only to be hauled down. He took responsibility for the penalty but failed to connect well and with the Spartans keeper going the right way, he prevented another goal.
Two minutes later MONCRIEFF found the net again. Drummond was the provider but the striker smashed the ball in and then from the restart BYRNE won possession and ran through the centre of the oppositon defence to complete the scoring. Quite a second half and for Pars fans looking for a game to watch this Saturday, you could do worse that taking in the 19s next friendly away to juniors, Ballingry Rovers.
