The Under 19s were pitched into a severe test in their season opener played at St Andrews on Saturday afternoon. Opponents Queens Park who had already the benefit of pre season friendlies against Queen of the South and Dundee United XI under their belts, fielded seven of their first team squad against a Dunfermline team that included the three first team squad members who did not travel to Austria.
Pat Clarke, Conor Schiavone and Steven Leslie started in a side that also contained three trialists in defence. Right from the kick off Queens Park had the Pars under pressure but Ross Millen had a shot at goal blocked in 11 minutes and Ryan Goodfellow had kept out Kieran Kennedy before the opening goal.
In 13 minutes Kennedy crossed from the right, Sean Burns returned and Jamie LONGWORTH had the easiest of chances to stick the ball away. Goodfellow then pulled off fine saves to deny both Burns and Longworth before Ross Drummond powered forward. Whelan and Sinclair squeezed the Pars man out as he drove into the penalty box and the referee had no doubt in pointing to the spot.
Pat CLARKE assumed responsibility for the 27th minute spot kick and tucked it away in the bottom left to give Parry no chance: 1-1. Clarke then displayed fine control to create a great chance but no one could get on the end of the inviting goal across the face of goal. Longworth then hit the post after Craig Smith had set him up, Goodfellow prevented Smith after he looked through on goal and then the Pars keeper saved from Paul Gallagher.
Two minutes from the break, Clarke saw his shot held by Parry after a defender had taken the sting out of his shot. At the other end Goodfellow held an effort from Sean Burns but next Shaun Byrne was forced into conceding a free kick on the left and from that Queens Park went ahead. It was in the last minute of the half and Burns pumped the ball towards the far post where Jamie BROUGH arrived at just the right moment to power a header into the Fifers net.
Half Time: Queens Park 2 Dunfermline 1
The Third Division side increased their lead 12 minutes into the second half. Smith was right to pick out Kennedy on the edge of the box. The Pars defence stopped the shot but the ball broke nicely for Queens top scorer last season, LONGWORTH to smash in number three. Goodfellow made further saves but was beaten again in 63 minutes when a Burns cross set up SMITH. 4-1.
Midway through the half, Clarke was in a good position to fire another shot at the Queens Park goal but his sights were set too high. Queens added a fifth through SMITH in 75 minutes and four minutes later the former Ashfield junior finished off his hattrick.
Chris Hackland delivered a dangerous pass in from the right only for Parry to save in front of goal at the feet of Byrne but Dunfermline were caught out when the keeper`s kick out was nodded on for SMITH to run on to and send the ball past the advancing Goodfellow.
It was a tough test for Dunfermline but Pat Clarke impressed as he stood out overall. The 19s will probably not encounter tougher opponents in any of their following pre season preparations.
