U19s v Airdrie United
Monday, 7th Mar 2011SFL U19 League
AIRDRIE UNITED 1 DUNFERMLINE 2
The U19s were at the Excelsior Stadium on Monday night to take on Airdrie United on their artificial surface. Dunfermline were without Conor Schiavone as the sixth placed Pars took on the side just above them in the league. Blair Henderson wore the number nine shirt.Ryan Goodfellow was called upon in the first minute and he made a fine save from a shot well struck by Scott Sally. Three minutes later the Airdrie striker popped another on target but this time straight at the Pars keeper.
The home team piled on the pressure for the opening 15 minutes but then Steven Leslie broke into the Diamonds box. Despite being pulled back by Trialist he got to the byeline but the keeper blocked his shot. Encouraged by that Fraser Moncrieff then tried a shot from 20 yards that the keeper was happy to turn over his bar for the Pars first corner of the evening. Despite that descending into a goalmouth scramble the defence survived,
Ross Millen next found himself in an unaccustomed position in front of goal but took too many touches and the chance was gone. In 21 minutes Leslie again troubled the Airdrie defence deep inside their box but a rough tackle put an end to the danger. The Pars certainly had the Diamonds on the run and duly got the goal they deserved in 28 minutes. Henderson was played wide right and his cross was perfectly placed for LESLIE to turn in off the left goalpost.
The lead was doubled just four minutes later when the role of provider and executioner were reversed. An Aaron Scott shot was deflected behind for a corner on the right. When he delivered Leslie met it with a header that sent the ball towards the far post where HENDERSON made no mistake, 2-0 to the Pars.
In 42 minutes Jonny Fisher swung in a corner from the left that Goodfellow fought through a crowded six yard box to fist away and thankfully Clark Rankin hammered the follow up wide of target.
Half Time: Airdrie United 0 Dunfermline 2
The second half again started with Airdrie on the offensive but Moncrieff fought well to produce a great cross from the left corner flag in 52 minutes and Henderson was unlucky at the near post. Keeper Corvi tipped over Scott`s shot direct from a corner five minutes later but he held the next one, Moncrieff and Henderson were unlucky in front of goal but then the Fifers were caught on the break and Ross Millen conceded a penalty as Morgan threatened to burst through on the left.
Scott took responsibility for the 59th minute spot kick, firing firmly to the keeper`s right but Goodfellow went the right way and pulled off a great save. To make matters worse for Airdrie Ally Morgan blasted the follow up over the crossbar.
There was another near thing ten minutes later when Rankin ran on to a long ball from Malone, he clipped the ball over Goodfellow on the left side of his box but Ross Drummond covered in behind to keep the Diamonds out.
A MacDonald run in 81 minutes teed up Leslie but this time he didn`t connect in his usual clinical style allowing Corvi to drop to his right to hold. An Airdrie goal five minutes from time kept the contest going to the end. It was MALONE who scrambled the ball over the line after Goodfellow and his defenders had been drawn out to the right.
