U19s v Montrose
Sunday, 27th Feb 2011Dunfermline overwhelm Montrose in SFL Youth League match at KInross Community High.
DUNFERMLINE 6 MONTROSE 1
Even though Dunfermline ended with only ten men after John MacDonald was forced to retire after all three subs had been used, the Under 19s coasted to win by an impressive margin. Indeed given the number of missed chances they should have reached double figures. This league game was played on the Kinross astroturf and it got off to a flying start with goals at both ends within the opening ten minutes. Steven LESLIE shot the Pars ahead in seven minutes, breaking through the middle, fending off the challenge of Ryan Arbuckle and sticking the ball past the advancing keeper from the edge of the box.
Three minutes later Martin BOYLE got the better of Kerr Young and from the right, the nippy Montrose no.10 zapped a shot past Ryan Goodfellow. The Angus outfit might then have gone ahead had Goodfellow not made such a good fisted interception in the following minute. Unluckily for Montrose Dunfermline went up the park and forced a corner that they were to score from.
At the right corner Conor Schiavone touched the ball short to MacDonald and his ball across the six yard line was beautifully met by Shaun BYRNE as he ghosted in at the far side to force an Andy Tod-esque header past the Montrose keeper.
Dunfermline then showered balls across the face of goal and at keeper Matty Smith. Schiavone got behind the Montrose defence to cut back a great ball for Leslie but his first time shot went straight at Smith. Fraser Moncrieff supplied from the left and again Leslie found the keeper in the way.
In 33 minutes Boyle again threatened to burst through the defence but Young conceded a free kick in making sure that didn`t happen and Dale Clark sent the setpiece over the wall and into Goodfellow`s hands. At the other end MacDonald hit a stinger at the keeper and next Schiavone was beaten to the ball by Smith 20 yards out.
Half Time: Dunfermline 2 Montrose 1
The home side started the second half on fire and Montrose found them hard to handle. MacDonald powered a shot on target but saw it blocked, Moncrieff smashed one over the bar before a MacDonald cross in 50 minutes let in LESLIE to slot in number three.
From a Schiavone corner Young sent the ball over the top but in 53 minutes LESLIE headed in Dunfermline`s fourth. Right back Ross Millen ran on to a ball from MacDonald and the striker completed his hat-trick with a strong header to the bottom right.
Chances kept coming for Dunfermline. Schiavone launched a shot wide and high, Ross Drummond raced up the left to send over an opportunity for MacDonald but he blasted that over the top. Moncrieff then pulled off some neat play to create a chance for Schiavone but again his sights were high.
There were certainly more goals in this game and it was no surprise, except to the Montrose defender he robbed the ball off, when BYRNE rolled in number 5 in 62 minutes. Boyle rattled Goodfellow`s crossbar before Steven LESLIE completed the scoring in 64 minutes. He stole the ball of Montrose trialist, Cameron Lomax and stuck the ball in the net with little resistance.
The Dunfermline strikers were immediately subbed allowing others chances to pepper the goal. Captain Aaron Scott sent a 25 yarder at Smith and from a Blair Henderson cross Moncrieff and Hackland had swings at the ball but the defenders on the line kept them out.
MacDonald limped off in 84 minutes but by that time the contest was well and truly over.
