U19s v Dundee
Sunday, 31st Oct 2010Goals from Kerr Young and Conor Schiavone not enough
DUNFERMLINE 2 DUNDEE 3
Dunfermline got punished for not cashing in on their first half superiority and not taking their chances to fall to consecutive defeats in the SFL U19 League. For the Sunday afternoon fixture at Kinross Hamish French made only one change Aaron Sommerville replacing Ryan Goodfellow in goal.Chris Hackland created the first chance of the match bearing in from the left in five minutes only to see his shot turned behind by Dundee stopper Mark Mackie. Steven Leslie then blasted the corner kick delivery over the crossbar.
Three minutes later both Hackland and Leslie had bites at a chance but the ball was cleared. Hackland next fed Blair McWhirter on the overlap but Leskie hit the full back`s cut back at the keeper. John MacDonald tried a shot from the other side but his sights were high.
Dunfermline were dominant throughout the opening quarter and duly got the goal they deserved from an 18th minute Conor Schiavone corner. When the ball came over from the left Kerr YOUNG rose at the far post to head his side into the lead.
In 23 minute Schiavone sent in a corner from the right that travelled through the six yard box only to be returned to cause bedlam in front of goal. Leslie again possibly had the better opportunity in the melee but the defence survived. Dundee brought Sommerville into action top hold a lofted shot from Ross Carnegie and then McWhirter brought down Alan Tulleth inside the penalty box but the Dundee man only earned a yellow card!
Next McWhirter drove a 25 yard shot wide left, Schiavone sent a 30 yarder over the bar and Leslie smash an attempt wide as well. The visitors came into the game as half time approached forcing a couple of corners. It was the aftermath of the second corner that led to the equaliser. Tulleth had switched wings and it was his penetrating run from the left that caused the trouble. A cross from the byeline was not properly cleared and Leighton McINTOSH stuck the ball away to make it 1-1 in 41 minutes.
Half Time: Dunfermline 1 Dundee 1
Blair Henderson replaced Chris Hackland three minutes into the second half and Shaun Byrne supplied Leslie with more ammunition in 55 minutes but the striker failed to pull the trigger on it. Dundee crept more into things. Gary Irons shot wide right and then Carnegie sent a piledriver outside Sommerville`s right hand post.
Midway through the second half a diagonal ball from the left was sent past Sommerville by Graham WEBSTER to give Dundee the lead. Still the Pars created chances but could not convert them. A MacDonald corner in 69 minutes was taken quickly short to Schiavone but when the cross went over Henderson`s effort came off the keeper for another.
Two minutes later MacDonald who was beginning to see more of the ball cut inside his marker but hit his shot from 12 yards over the bar. A strong run by Drummond then forced another corner on the left but when Schiavone centred that one Henderson lofted his shot and it was taken by Mark Mackie.
With ten minutes to go it was Dunfermline`s turn to be denied a penalty as Byrne was chopped down as he homed in on goal. Having lost out to the referee`s no decision Dunfermline then suffered a double blow as TULLETH produced a fantastic third Dundee goal. Sommerville was off his line, but possibly not out of position as play travelled over half way towards him, but as the Dundee no.7 lobbed the ball from 30 yards it just sailed over the keeper and into his net.
In the final minute a deflected Byrne shot forced another corner. From the right Schiavone found Henderson on the edge of the six yard box but the young sub glanced the chance wide of the left post. One minute of added time had been played when Schiavone drew the ball back from the edge of the D to hammer it over the bar.
Dunfermline were to score a late consolation as Michael Hutcheon took the feet from Byrne and SCHIAVONE stepped up to give the Dundee keeper no chance of stopping him spot kick.
