The Reserve League Cup Semi Finals which were held over from last season were played this week. Raith Rovers defeated Annan Athletic on Monday night by six goals to one. Jamie Mole, Reece Donaldson, Scott McBride, Graham Weir, Thomas Graham and Jamie Mackie scored the Rovers goals.
On Wednesday evening Dunfermline Athletic became the other finalists to make the Final an all Fife affair, when they defeated Ayr United 4-1.
For the first quarter of an hour the visitors were in ascendancy with Roddy Paterson presented with two good chances, one that he shot wide, the other he broke clear and crossed but there was no one there to convert. Ayr United`s forwards were quick to take up opportunities to run at the Fife defence and Dale Moore fired a shot high and wide.
The Pars won their first corner in 14 minutes. Captain Aaron Scott sent the corner in for Grant Munro to head on target but ihis attempt was blocked and Ryan Thomson hit the post with the follow up. Five minutes later Chris Hackland`s cross for Scott was deflected for a corner but the Pars failed to take anything from that or from another that followed.
Having got on top the Pars scored the first goal of the evening in 24 minutes. The ball came off the woodwork from Thomson`s shot, Steven Leslie had a go, Thomson put in a header and eventually it fell for Jordan WHITE to stab into the net.
The one goal lead became two after 38 minutes. A Sommerville free kick was launch upfield to Hackland who moved the ball through White to SCOTT who belted a good goal into the top right fromoutside the box.
In 42 minutes a Dunfermline free kick from Kerr Young travelled to Leslie whose cross was defended to THOMSON who finished. The first half ended with Leslie`s shot hitting the post and THOMSON scoring on the rebound.
Half Time: Dunfermline 4 Ayr United 0
The Pars should have increased their lead in the second half given the chances that fell to White, Young, Leslie, MacDonald, Thomson and McWhirter. It was the visitors who scored however. After coming close in 75th minute when sub George Thompson was unlucky not to convert a cross, Ayr`s Stuart MILLIGAN fired in from 20 yards for a consolation in 89th minute.
Coach Hamish French felt that it was a very competitive game in which Dunfermline defended well in the first half to keep Ayr out. " To go in 4-0 up at the break flattered us a wee bit but we did score some quality goals. It was a little more scrappy in the second half. We maybe should have closed the game out better and it was disappointing to lose a goal late on. But it was a good performance in which we created many good opportunities. We deserved to win."
