U19s v Cowdenbeath
Sunday, 18th Apr 2010U19 League Cup,
COWDENBEATH 0 DUNFERMLINE 1
Dunfermline U19 travelled to Central Park on Sunday lunchtime for the second of three U19 Youth League Cup matches. Blair McWhirter started in place of the injured Jamie Birnie and Lewis Turner returned from holiday to take the place of Connor Schivone. It was a first half that Dunfermline dominated without troubling the keeper too much. Cowdenbeath had three really good chances that could have put them ahead but the visitors scored at a crucial stage two minutes into injury time at the end of the first half.
Stefan Scougall was first to threaten breaking through one on one with the keeper, Lee in the opening minutes but the keeper came out on top. Dunfermline found most joy down the left with Turner, Leslie and McIntosh all delivered dangerous balls in from the left but Cowdenbeath dealt well with them.
In 18th minute the Cowdenbeath right back sent a free kick through the Pars box with no6 extremely unlucky not to get a touch at the far post. Seven minutes later the same full back got deep to rattle over a good cross that 9 swished at and Dunfermline struggled to clear, leaving 11 the chance to smash a low shot on target that Craig Bald did really well to save.
Cowden were creative on the counterattack and no.7 put in another cross from the right that no.11 amazing managed to fire outside the right post. Then while playing added minute for an unusually high number of head injuries, Dunfermline`s persistence down the left eventually paid off.
Turner stuck to his task as no.4 tried to cut him out and when he touched the ball into the six yard box a clearance teed up Aaron SCOTT to drive the ball home from 20 yards.
Half Time: Cowdenbeath 0 Dunfermline 1
It remained one way traffic in the second half. Rees Smith made the keeper hold a 50th minute free kick and half time sub jordan Glennie laced a good chance through to Leslie in 65 but he sent the ball over the bar. The Cowden keeper was quickly off his line to thwart a Turner break into the left side of his box.
In 74 minutes Turner kept control of the ball on a run down the left and into the box but when the cut back came Glennie`s way the keeper narrowed the angle and beat the shot away. Glennie then had a chance with a free header from a Turner corner but he could get enough on his effort.
Next Sunday the section will be decided when Dunfermline face Raith Rovers in St Andrews. The Rovers defeated Cowdenbeath 4-1 the previous week so this will be no easy fixture for the young Pars.
