Dunfermline 2 Clyde 0
Saturday, 10th Jan 2009Homecoming Scotland Scottish Cup: Nick Phinn (19) 1-0: Graham Bayne (67) 2-0
For the visit of Clyde in the Homecoming Scotland Scottish Cup, Dunfermline gaffer Jim McIntyre made one change from the team that lost at Dundee; Greg Ross was out and Graham Bayne returned. Clyde had Ruari MacLennan, Chris Higgins and David McKay in replacing Tony Stevenson, Mark Brown and Alan Lowing.
The teams changed ends for the kick off with Bayne and Kirk getting the cup tie underway with the Pars attacking the goal in front of the McCathie Stand. Calum Woods had the first attempt at goal in fifth minute but was well wide right. Bayne headed down a Shields free kick in the next minute but Kirk was denied in the six yard box by the Clyde defence as he fought for the scraps.
The visitors made Paul Gallacher hold a shot from Pat Clarke in seven minutes after Alan Trouten`s pass sent Willie McLaren down the left to eliver a dangerous cross. Heavy rain was driving down from west to east as Clyde won the first corner of the afternoon but their low cross was easily cleared.
A 12th minute free kick was belted by Scott Muirhead right into the out rushing defender but Scott Wilson recovered the ball to set up Nick Phinn for a shot on target that again was blocked. The midfielder had better luck in 19th minute however from an easier chance. Perseverance by Andy Kirk retained possession 35 yards out and when he fed the pass to Steven Bell on the right he got in behind the Bully Wee defence to square the ball for PHINN to tap in at the far post.
The opening goal is always meant to be significant and Rory Loy headed narrowly wide in 21st minute, then next minute keeper Hutton tipped away a Kirk effort as the Pars threatened to kill the cup tie off.
Clyde would not have that however and nearly sneaked an equaliser in 26th minute. A good move on the right side of the Pars penalty box from McLaren to Mckay was neatly touched on to Clarke and Gallacher had to be very alert to take the flick on from close quarters.
The visiting fans were on their feet appealling for a penalty as Muirhead had a hold of McKay`s shirt but all they got was a corner that again created no danger to the home defence.
After a couple of minutes stoppage for an injury to Muirhead, Bell lofted a high ball into the Clyde box but Hutton was out to grasp the high ball before Kirk. Woods collected a yellow card for a tackle from behind on McLaren and from the free kick Higgins pumped the ball in for McKay in the six yard box to head over the crossbar.
Composure in midfield won the Pars a 44th minute corner after Bell passed to Phinn and he in turn sent Muirhead down the left to cross firmly. The corner brought no luck and the half ended with two corners at the other end.
Half Time: Dunfermline 1 Clyde 0
Clyde were first to threaten in the second period after MacLennan robbed Glass on half way and he picked out Clarke who slipped a neat pass to his right requiring Loy to drop back with a telling tackle as his man lined up for a shot at Gallacher.
It was ten minutes into the half before Dunfermline got into any sort of promising position. Phinn sent the ball wide to Muirhead and he forced a good defensive header out of Lithgow as he hammered the ball into the box. Despite playing into the wind and rain Clyde tried hard to get back into the game with Clarke heading over, Trouten being blocked by Woods and then Clarke shooting wide.
Jim McIntyre made his first substitution in 59 minutes, throwing on new on loan signing Jamie Mole in favour of Kirk. It was Clyde that again came closest to scoring when Woods square ball broke off the back of McLaren and MacLennan latched on to the chance, drilling the ball on target from 25 yards but the ball was deflected off Shields for a corner.
Dunfermline got the second goal that they so badly needed after 67 minutes. A pass forward from Stephen Glass was controlled by Bell and moved on for BAYNE, on the edge of the box, to release a shot that was always bound for the top left corner. The home fans were happy and somewhat relieved to be on their feet celebrating another Pars goal.
Wilson headed over Hutton`s bar when a free kick was sent in deep from the left by Glass and after Bell won another down on the right, Glass again found his skipper at the back post but his inviting knock down was smacked away by the Clyde defence. Clyde never gave up and did ping a few balls around in front of Gallacher but they were not to find the net.
Cheers met a wild swing from sub Gary McSwegan, Bell lifted a Pars effort on to the roof of the net and Wilson was inches wide from a Glass corner. The league match three weeks ago had much more of a cup tie atmosphere but a Dunfermline home win is always welcome. The club will be delighted to be in Sunday afternoon`s Fifth Round draw. The last time they knocked out Clyde they went all the way to the Cup Final, so here`s hoping!

Wednesday, 7th Jan 2009The clubs have only been drawn together in the Cup seven times previously, and the Pars have come out on top on three occasions, and one of those required a replay.
The first victory was back in 1952, although after being well in command the Pars were fortunate to survive a brave
The last time the teams met in the Cup at East End Park was in 1977, and after the first game ended 0-0, the Pars travelled to Shawfield for the replay four days later. This time DA made no mistake, although it could have been very different if Harry Hood`s header in the opening minute had not slipped narrowly past. Walter Borthwick opened the scoring in 41 minutes, and further goals from Kenny Watson in 67 minutes and Roddy Georgeson right on the final whistle gave the Pars a comfortable passage to the next round.
Most fans will remember the last Scottish Cup meeting at Broadwood. After the Saturday fixture, 17 days earlier, was abandoned because of heavy snowfall, the Pars won through 3-0 with first half goals, two from Barry Nicholson (one from the spot) and another from Lee Bullen. That was just one of the steps that was successfully negotiated to that year`s Hampden final.
The Pars won 4-1 the last time they met on cup duty - the Challenge Cup on 5th September 2007 but the last match in the First Division between the teams - just before Christmas - was played in cup tie style with the Pars going from 2-1 up to 4-2 down in a match that ended 4-4.
