Tuesday, 14th Oct 2008Arbroath one ahead at half time thanks to Robbie Raeside, Weir added a second in 53. Williamson got one back from the spot in 78.
DUNFERMLINE 1 ARBROATH 2
Dunfermline fielded a youthful side against an Arbroath eleven containing seven of the first team that started their last Second Division match against Raith Rovers. Early chances came the hosts way, Iain Williamson sending a Simon Wiles cross wide of the left post in the third minute and then five minutes later Jamie Bishop nicked a good Wiles delivery away from Williamson.
Arbroath`s first good opportunity came in 13 minutes when Scott Gates made a great run and got the better of the breaks of the ball to deceive the Pars defence before Reidford stepped in to clear.
Midway through the half Reidford did well to again thwart Arbroath when it looked impossible for Steven Weir to miss. A Lee Graham challenge was then rather cruelly penalised as Weir rose to a high ball and the Red Lichties grabbed the chance to take the lead from a Nicky Smith free kick. The Pars keeper could do little to stop the follow up on his initial block and Weir fed the ball back to Robbie RAESIDE who turned it into the Pars net from 8 yards in 27th minute.
Rees Smith sent over a cross that was nicely met by Stuart Dearden but keeper Scott Murdoch made an equally good job of holding the powerful header. At the other end Barry Sellars saw a good effort touched around the post by Reidford.
Half Time: Dunfermline 0 Arbroath 1
A Wiles free kick in 50th minute was headed on to the crossbar by Steven Bell and Williamson`s follow up at the left post was deflected for a corner. Dearden headed the delivery from the left back across the goals but Ryan Thomson`s shot was blocked and Arbroath`s counterattack led to a free kick from which they subsequently scored.
Simon Wiles
Sellars sent the ball low into the Pars six yard box and WEIR deflected the ball past Reidford at the near post. Wiliamson had two more good chances in 61st and 63rd minute, the latter after an extremely impressive break down the right by Wiles but the keeper held the first attempt and the second was blocked.
When Paul Lunan bundled White off the ball a free kick in a central position just 25 yards out allowed Wiles to fire a shot around the six man wall but the crossbar came to Arbroath`s rescue. Two minutes later though Williamson was through on the left side of the box and Bishop handled in his challenge to concede a penalty. WILLIAMSON assumed the responsibility and converted the 78th minute spot kick but there was to be no further scoring.
