U19s v Arbroath
Friday, 25th Apr 2008Final appearances for Garry Leighton, Charlie Bradshaw, Derek Howie, Sandy Nairn and Kris Maxwell.
DUNFERMLINE 1 ARBROATH 1
The final match of the SFL U19 League was played at the Fleet Ground Rosyth on Friday night. Even although Dunfermline won 2-0 against these opponents in the League Cup only 12 days before, on a cold dull night they could not recreate the dominance of that day.
Dunfermline had the better of the first half. Sandy Nairn saw his early effort kicked off the line before Ryan Thomson hammered the Pars into the lead in 19th minute. A Rees Smith corner kick was swung in from the right and the seventeen year old controlled the ball before masterly beating the keeper at his near post.
After Andrew Esson was carried off in 35 minutes, Arbroath responded with a free kick from the left side. Michael McIlravey fired in a vicious shot that required Pars keeper Craig Bauld to be at his athletic best to cover his top right with a superb one handed save.
Connor Schivone threatened with a headed effort just before the break but the visitors grabbed an equaliser 20 minutes in the second 45. They capitalised on a decent period of pressure when McIlravey burst into the right side of the home box, evading the challenge of Garry Leighton to deliver a cross that gave David Easton the simplest of tasks to smash the ball home from close in.
Neither side really looked like beating the keepers during the remainder of the match with Dunfermline handicapped by losing players after using their three subs. Derek Howie had to hobble off and six minutes from time and Nairn was given a second yellow so reducing the Fifers to just nine men.
Dunfermline leap frog Partick Thistle into 11th place as a consequence of the point and Arbroath remain in 18th in this division of 21 teams. For those players who are leaving the club, many thanks for your efforts which have been extensively called upon both at this level and also in the reserves. You leave with every best wish for your continued career in football.
