U19s v Dundee
Sunday, 30th Mar 2008Good defensive performance limits Dundee`s chances and earns Pars a creditable win.
DUNFERMLINE ATHLETIC 2 DUNDEE 0
Dunfermline`s U19 League Cup victory over Dundee at The Fleet Ground on Sunday morning was built on the foundations of a resolute defence. The young central defensive pairing of Lee Graham and Harry McGregor soaked up most things that the visitors tried and Greg Paterson behind them pulled off the three or four saves that were required of him.
The visitors ended the game with only nine men and the contest was as good as over when substitute Craig Marshall was shown a straight red for abusive language in 81st minute. Martin McCord collected a second yellow in the third minute added to the 90.
Dundee had an early chance before Graeme Collins tested Paterson with a low drive from a 13th minute free kick that the keeper held at the second attempt. Paterson then had to be alert to come for a Brian Clark cross as Dundee started to thread together some useful plays.
The home side responded with a Paul Willis shot deflected for a corner and McGregor heading wide from the setpiece. Dundee goalkeeper, Michael White created some concern for his defence by dropping a fairly easy catch but his team mates scrambled the ball away.
It was a slip by Robbie McAlpine as the last defender that led to the Pars opening the scoring in 33rd minute. Derek Howie`s through ball wrong footed the Dundee right back and Kris Maxwell broke free to run in on the keeper on the left side of the box. The one on one with the keeper suited the striker`s predator instinct and he found the net at the bottom right.
Dunfermline had two more good opportunities to increase their advantage before half time.A clever back flick from Lawrie Cannon set up Maxwell on the 18 yard line but this time Gavin Burns read the move and blotted out the chance.
Next a pass from Graham was assisted on to Charlie Bradshaw off Maxwell and the cut back found Howie but his shot was taken by White albeit at the second attempt.
Hamish French`s team kept up the pressure after the break with Willis at the end of a Cannon - Maxwell move but firing wide. On the hour White had luck on his side when he called for and then missed a Bradshaw drive but the ball went outside the left post.
Four minutes later however he was the hero with a fantastic double save from firstly Willis and then Cannon. Dundee then had perhaps their best spell of pressure with McCord greatly involved.
Clark had a shot blocked and Willis forced a save out of white with a counterattack. In 74th minute Collins slipped the ball to Stephen Hegarty on an overlap but his cross just failed to find Marshall. Three minutes later Marshall and Johnson combined to tee up McCord a shot that ended up wide and with eight minutes remaining Paterson dived to his left to hold a firmly struck shot from Clark.
The match ended dramatically with Dundee keeper White up for a 92nd minute corner but the delivery destined for him was intercepted by Jed Hiroz and laced by Bradshaw to Maxwell on the halfway line out towards the left. An open goal invited the long distance shot but that was going wide until Willis sprinted up for the tap in. (see pictures below)
