U19s v Dumbarton
Sunday, 4th Nov 2007Iain Williamson goal separates the sides
DUMBARTON 0 DUNFERMLINE 1
The U19s recorded a good away win in their league match against Dumbarton played at Bellshill Juniors ground on Sunday.
Like the first team, Hamish French`s side were struck by illness and injuries. John McCulloch, Paul Willis, Sandy Nairn, Derek Howie and Garry Leighton were all missing. Scott McBride was used in the first team the previous day but Iain Williamson was brought in alongside a number of the U17 squad.
The only goal of the match came in 11th minute from a quickly taken free kick by Gary McLachlan. Having been tumbled 25 yards out in a central position Gary got back on his feet and sent the ball wide right for Charlie Bradshaw to centre. WILLIAMSON took a touch, turned and hit a left footed shot past former Par Peter Shaw from eight yards.
The Sons did not make it easy for their visitors with Bruce Thompson breaking through the middle in 20th minute. Greg Paterson was out sharpish to narrow the angle and the shot went wide. Six minutes later and Paterson had to be fully outstretched to hold another shot and then he made it look easy holding a Jason McLaughlan free kick that dipped over the defensive wall.
On the half hour Thompson ripped another route through the Pars midfield to pick out David McNaught but his shot from an angle on the left slipped beyond the far post. Dunfermline replied with MacLachlan striking a Bradshaw free kick narrowly wide right and Williamson testing the keeper from a Kris Maxwell cut back.
The Fifers should really have increased their lead in 65th minute. A big ball up the right let in Williamson to beat off the challenge of Yule and he swept the ball across the six yard box for Maxwell but his effort back across the keeper, miraculously slipped wide of the right post.
Fifteen minutes from time Paterson saved after sub Andrew Moore had played a neat 1-2 in the left channel but the remaining chances went the Pars way. In 81st minute Williamson evaded the challenge of two Dumbarton players but melted his shot over the crossbar. Then two minutes from time a Bradshaw corner from the left was headed goalwards by Lee Graham but Dumbarton scrambled the ball away from Maxwell on the left post.
