Linlithgow Rose 0 Dunfermline XI 1
Sunday, 29th Jul 2007Pars XI at Prestonfield for friendly v Junior Cup holders
The home side fielded seven of the side that lifted the Scottish Junior Cup in May at East End Park, while the Dunfermline side was a blend of youth and experience with Sol Bamba, Calum Woods and Iain Williamson getting starts after playing small roles through the week. Aaron Labonte was included in central defence. The match got off to a cautious start with neither team yielding much to provide goalmouth incident. It was the 20th minute when Nick Phinn sent Williamson in on the left side of the box but Steven Pinkowski came out well to block. From the resultant corner Davie Muir sent a header on target but again the keeper saved.
A nice move in 25 minutes from Williamson to Phinn and then Muir ended up with a cross from the right that Maxwell headed narrowly over the crossbar. The Rose were not out of this game by any means and Sean Murdoch did well to fist clear a corner from the left.
On the half hour a ball from midfield found Scott McBride on the left and his ball in behind the defence set Williamson off in a race with Pinkowski. The keeper cleared the ball with his feet on the top of his box but the ball fell nicely for Maxwell to shoot on target. Pinkowski leapt up from the deck and stopped that but lined up Williamson for an attempt that should have broken the deadlock but this time the crossbar came to the junior team`s rescue.
Dunfermline had another chance before the break when Muir laid back a chance for Phinn to drive at goal from 20 yards but he was high and over the bar. Calum Woods long ball into the Linlithgow box after their keeper had raced out to clear caused amusement as the Pinkowski luck continued when the ball broke off his back as he ran towards goal.
Half Time: Linlithgow Rose 0 Dunfermline 0
Paul Willis came on for Derek Howie and the visitors continued their push for a goal. McBride launched a fierce shot that whacked the wall behind the goal and then a Phinn corner was fisted clear by the keeper.
A Linlithgow corner in 52 minutes ended up in Murdoch`s hands but after it appeared to be cleared by Bamba on to McSween. Muir had a great chance from a Phinn delivery in from the right corner flag but chose not to melt it first time and by the time he composed himself for the shot the keeper was well positioned to turn the ball out for a corner. Scott Morrison swung that in from the right but Muir`s knock down to Bamba was directed wide right.
In 59 minutes a mistake in the centre of the home defence presented Willis with a chance. He advanced towards goal and released a shot from the edge of the box only to see his low shot slip narrowly outside the left goalpost. The long awaited Pars goal duly arrived three minutes later.
Scott Morrison prepares to cut back to Kris Maxwell with outstretched arms
Iain Williamson on the left corner of the Rose box played the ball into the path of Morrison as he exploded through and turned back a fine ball that Kris MAXWELL drilled home from 18 yards.
Maxwell was given a further scoring chance in 72 minutes when Williamson`s pass was at perfect height for the Pars no.10 to glance a header at goal but he was wide left.
An 84th minute free kick played long by Woods let Maxwell scurry down the right and his cross was just too high for McBride to get any weight on so Pinkowski again came out on top. The Pars finished strongly with Williamson launching another effort just wide of goal. In the end the one goal was all that separated the teams but the Pars management must have been pleased to watch some of the fringe players putting in spirited displays.
