U19s v Derry City
Thursday, 26th Jul 2007Foyle Cup Tournament - Young Pars go down to goals from a corner, a penalty and a free kick.
DUNFERMLINE ATHLETIC 0 DERRY CITY 3
Initially both sides struggled to get to grips with the tight pitch at the changed venue, Rugby Club on the outskirts of Derry. Possession was hard to sustain but it was the home side who went ahead after seven minutes. A corner was not particularly well defended and a header fell to an opponent who poked the bsall home from close range.
The Pars first chance came in 14 m,inutes, a Scott McBride free kick from the edge of the penalty box narrowly clear the crossbar. Pressure was exerted on Derry but apart from a Derek Howie chance there was not much that tested the Derry keeper.
Charlie Bradshaw got in a shot early in the first half and another McBride free kick in 50 minutes caused a melee in front of goal after Dearden had knocked the ball down at the far post. After the ball bobbed about the box it was the defence who got it away successfully.
Derry were still causing the Fifers problems but got the break they were looking for courtesy of a harsh penalty decision in 54 minutes. A dangerous ball in took a bounce and grazed John McCulloch`s arm; Greg Paterson got his hand to the shot from the spot but couldn`t prevent in finding the bottom left corner of his net.
A third Derry goal came just five minutes after their penalty conversion. This time it was from a free kick some 22 yards out; a good strike rounding the defensive wall to net in the bottom corner.
Dunfermline tried hard to get back into the match but the tight pitch made defending easier. Gary McLachlan shot over the bar and two minutes from the end McBride was unlucky with a shot from distance.
