U19s v Celtic
Friday, 20th Apr 2007Calum Smith gets consolation goal as Stephen Kenny watches young Celts give lesson in finishing
DUNFERMLINE 1 CELTIC 4
Calum Smith scored the Pars only goal in SPL U19 match that put Celtic level on points on top of the league with Rangers who could only draw with Dundee United.
Celtic looked the sharper, took their chances well with the match was as good as over before Dunfermline scored since by that time Celtic were four up.
Hamish French`s side could have scored before Celtic went into an early lead. Strikers Alan McDonough and Calum Smith linked well to create an opportunity for Nick Phinn but his effort went over the crossbar.
At the other end a poor clearance from Greg Paterson from a pass back landed nicely for Kevin CAWLEY and he netted from 20 yards out. That third minute goal was followed by a second thirteen minutes later. A long ball out of defence was taken by Cillian SHERIDAN and he held off the challenge of Neil Fenwick, passed him and finished nicely from the edge of the box.
Paterson will be looking to attribute some blame to the difficult conditions against the wind and on a hard and bumpy pitch but uncharacteristically he had another weak clearance that CAWLEY again cashed in on, sending the ball into the top corner to increase the Celtic lead to three in 25 minutes.
Things were looking really bleak for the Pars when just five minutes later Celtic scored another with a good strike from Mark MILLAR into the bottom left corner from 18 yards after fine play down the left.
Just five minutes before half time McDonough played Calum Smith in and he found the far corner of the net with a good effort.
Dunfermline got closer to Celtic in the second half but there were few goalscoring opportunities. Unfortunately the home team could take neither of their two reasonable chances. Phinn was unlucky with a header over the bar in 70 minutes and nine minutes from time when McDonough connected with a Phinn corner from the left, a defender was able to clear the attempt around his post.
