U19s v Inverness Caley Thistle
Friday, 23rd Mar 2007Maxwell scores but Highlanders stage comeback to take the points north.
DUNFERMLINE 1 INVERNESS CALEY THISTLE 2
The U19s took an early lead but the conditions helped their northern opponents to take the points from the Fleet Ground on Friday afternoon. Alan McDonough had the first shot on target in fifth minute but that was deflected wide for a corner.
Darren Stewart in goal for the Pars in the absence of Greg Paterson who was away with the Scotland U19 squad in Holland, was down well to save a good Caley chance before Dunfermline went ahead through Kris MAXWELL.
Patrick Halpin created a good move down the left side, squared to McDonough who in turn found his co-striker. Maxwell turned his defender and shot home from 8 yards.
The game was scrappy in the windy conditions but Caley equalised midway through the first half. A returned clearance was met on the volley 16 yards out to beat Stewart with a good finish.
The Pars fought their way back into the game before half time forcing a few corners without result. Playing with the wind in the second half the Caley Jags had the territorial advantage causing their opponents to defend several corners.
Scott McBride sustained a facial injury and had to be subbed by Gary McLachlan. Dunfermline continued to find it hard to get out of their own half but it took a penalty decision to give Caley the opportunity to go ahead just ten minutes from time. A lifted ball into the box only grazed Sandy Nairn`s hand but referee Whyte pointed to the spot.
The penalty was converted but the Pars had a chance to equalise in the final minute. Derek Howie made keeper John Calder palm away his effort and the luckless Nairn fired a shot from just eight yards out that hit the keeper as he lay on the deck.
