Three goal Phinn rocks Edinburgh opponents

HIBERNIAN 1 DUNFERMLINE 5

Dunfermline made the best of a blustery afternoon in Newtongrange to rock their Hibs opposite numbers. The Hibees started slightly better without troubling Darren Stewart in goal but it was the Fifers who had the first attempt at goal through Kris Maxwell; his 10th minute effort when he acepted a throw inside the Hibs box was sent into the sidenetting after a neat turn.

The Pars striker then tested the keeper before in 17 minutes  the visitors went ahead.  Fine play down the right allowed a good cross that Nick PHINN headed on target; Matthew Curtis made a good save but the ball broke back to the Pars midfielder to net from six yards.

Dunfermline continued to be positive with Calum Smith on the right side of midfield creating an opening for Maxwell to again force Curtis to save.  The diminutive striker then took advantage of slack play to pressurise the Hibs defence.  A pass back put Curtis under pressure and his hurried clearance was gathered by MAXWELL who chipped the keeper from 25 yards.

Smith tried a similar chipped attempt moments later from the inside right position that sneaked narrowly over the crossbar.  Dunfermline were to further extend their lead in the 34th minute from the penalty spot.  Again it was Smith`s play from the right feeding Maxwell on a good run into the penalty box that caused a Hibs defender to bundle the Pars man to the ground.  Patrick HALPIN made no mistake to make in three nil.

Just three minutes later, Derek Howie and Alan McDonough linked up well with the latter using his strength to muscle out his defender and cut back from the byeline for Nick PHINN to find the far corner of the net.

The second half conditions were worse and hindered good football but Dunfermline did not let Hibs back in and there were not so many scoring chances.

The Hibs keeper saved a Smith shot from the edge of the box in the 58th minute and Stewart at the Pars end was kept alert with a fine punched clearance.

Eight minutes later McDonough tried hard to get his name on the scoresheet, dispossessing a defender inside his own box, but choosing to shoot when a square ball might have been the better option.  The fifth Dunfermline goal was only two minutes away.  Again it came from a move down the right that PHINN was on the end of, dispatching the ball from the edge of the box into the bottom right.

Fifteen minutes from the end Hibs got a consolation goal from a corner.  The delivery in from the right created a free header for a Hibs player to send the ball between Sandy Nairn and the post.
