U19s v Falkirk
Friday, 16th Feb 2007Sean Muhsin put the Pars ahead but the Bairns fought back to earn them a win and third place in the League
DUNFERMLINE 1 FALKIRK 2
Although Dunfermline got off to an attacking start forcing three corners in the opening five minutes, Falkirk threatened through Paul Sludden and Mark Stewart both of whom hit the net but the offside flag was held high on both occasions.
The Pars took the initiative with a good passing move setting up Nick Phinn in eighth minute but Barclay saved. Then it was Alan McDonough who swung over a good cross from the right for Calum Smith to head over the crossbar from just outside the six yard box. After quarter of an hour Derek Howie received a Sean Muhsin corner from the left but he directed the effort wide.
A goal was deserved and it duly arrived in 21st minute. Phinn was wide left to send over a ball that McDonough flicked on and when it dropped eight yards out MUHSIN slotted home in the bottom right. Immediately after that McDonough looked to have doubled the advantage but the Falkirk keeper blocked on the line.
The visitors had not really caused Dunfermline`s defence too many problems but when John McCulloch dived into a tackle on the edge of his box he handed Falkirk a good opportunity from the free kick. Kevin MOFFAT did the business with a rocket into the top right when the defence should possibly have had that option covered.
Before half time Phinn launched a long free kick that Muhsin headed across goal but there were no takers. Muhsin created another chance with a fine cross but this time Calum Smith headed over the bar from six yards.
Ten minutes into the second half goalscorer Moffat hit a long ball down the middle and it ended up a race between Neil Fenwick and Mark Stewart. Greg Paterson came out and STEWART lobbed the ball over his head to find the net.
After that neither side had much opportunity to score. McDonough might have done better had he got more on a hooked shot from eight yards and the Pars had an appeal for a penalty turned down after Scott McBride was taken down in the box causing him to go off injured.
On the heavy and difficult pitch the match faded out into a fairly scrappy affair with all three points going back to Falkirk.
