Reserves v Hibernian
Tuesday, 31st Oct 2006Paterson does his best but Hibs still overrun Pars at Easter Road
HIBERNIAN 4 DUNFERMLINE 0
For this SPL Reserve fixture on Tuesday night, Dunfermline fielded a reserve team that included more U19s than first team players. With the new management team of John Collins and Tommy Craig watching from the Easter Road stand the visitors were always going to find this a tough fixture.
David Muir had two early chances; sending a long range effort flying past the post in seven minutes and then heading a Scott Muirhead cross over the crossbar.
Hibs always looked dangerous, replicating the fine passing play that has been their trademark in the SPL. A couple of good chances came their way but these were well defended and keeper Greg Paterson pulled off a fine save.
Scott Morrison produced a quality cross swinging in a good delivery after overlapping down the left, but Freddie Daquin, at the far post, screwed his chance across goal.
There was a let off as Hibs hit the crossbar when it would have been easier to score before Paterson again produced a good save from a promising Hibs move. Things finished differently, however, in 42nd minute when the Pars lost possession just inside their own half and a Hibs break down the left led followed a cross that was converted, put the home side into a half time lead.
Seventeen year old Paterson was back in action denying Hibs in the first minute of the second half but with Dunfermline finding it hard to get out of their own half a quickly taken free kick to Scott Brown was fired in from 25 yards.
The Fifers did enjoy a bit more of the game as Hibs sat on a comfortable advantage and were unlucky to concede a third as the Edinburgh side notched another that had suspicions of offside. A move through the middle appeared to have been successfully defended but the ball broke to a Hibs man to beat Paterson from 14 yards.
A Calum Woods own goal ten minutes from the end polished off a fairly miserable night for the Pars. The Liverpudlian stuck out his foot in defensive action but the ball spun over Paterson from 20 yards out.
