Reserves v Celtic
Tuesday, 3rd Oct 2006Roddy McKenzie limited Celtic as a strong side ran out victors at East End Park in yesterday afternoon`s Reserve League fixture.
DUNFERMLINE 0 CELTIC 2
It was not a runaway win however with the score remaining at 1-0 for sometime. Had the home side taken the opportunities that came their way then the final result might just have differed.
Indeed Dunfermline were the first to threaten with David Marshall forced to pull off a good double save as Calum Smith took advantage of a mix up in the Celtic defence. The keeper`s initial save set up Iain Williamson but he too was thwarted by the international keeper.
The Pars did not create many chances whilst Celtic`s main weapon was Craig Beattie was kept at bay. A disputed corner led to the opening goal in 28th minute. From the right side Derek Riordan picked out Shaun Maloney who had peeled to the edge of the box. He controlled the ball before shooting through a ruck of bodies to score at the far post.
Scott Morrison was short with a pass back but his keeper Roddy McKenzie was quick to react, Riordan was denied and the teams went in with just a single goal dividing them.
Williamson again had a good chance early into the second half. An inswinging free kick from Jamie McCunnie was headed on by the young striker but unfortunately at Marshall. Dunfermline had spells of possession but their opponents always looked capable of making dangerous breaks.
Smith fired a left footed shot narrowly wide from the edge of the box before Celtic got their second in 73 minutes. Pearson`s ball through the middle was moved around Neil Fenwick by Beattie with the possible illegal assistance of a hand and the Celtic striker slipped the ball past McKenzie.
McKenzie kept the score down saving another from Beattie and then narrowing substitute Jim O`Brien`s options to force him to shoot wide.
