U19s v Dundee United
Sunday, 20th Aug 2006Davie Muir played up front as Calum Smith was on standby for the first team, he came close to scoring but alas no Pars goals.
DUNDEE UNITED 1 DUNFERMLINE 0
This Saturday morning match had a similar feel to it as last Wednesday`s game against Rangers - plenty of chances but no goals and a creditable defeat. The home side started well at North End Park, Dundee with Pars keeper Greg Paterson forced into making a good double save early on.
Dunfermline played themselves into the game and things were fairly even until United forced a few corners before Ryan `Pongo` McCord struck a 35-yarder into the top corner. The response was immediate with Scott McBride causing the young Arabs to put a good defensive header over their own crossbar and then John McCulloch had a good shot from the edge of the box that skimmed the junction of bar and post.
Into the second half and it was more Dunfermline pressure. Davie Muir looked to be set to score from another McBride delivery but the goalkeeper punched clear. Iain Williamson made a forceful run down the left and released a shot but not good enough to equalise. In 59 minutes the Pars defence scrambled the ball away after United had created danger on the break.
Midway through the half Derek Howie and Sean Muhsin worked a nice move up the right that eventually supplied Muir with a chance but his shot on the turn was saved at the near post. Alan McDonough had a pop from distance on 69 minutes and a minute later a header was cleared off the line.
The best chance to get the goal back came with quarter of an hour remaining. Good play from Williamson teed up Muir for a shot that spun upwards off the keeper`s legs but a defender on the line managed to deny the Pars the equaliser.
Dunfermline finished forcing corners but United`s defence held out well with their keeper continuing the pull off some fine saves.
