Glanerbrug Select 0 Dunfermline 7
Saturday, 8th Jul 2006Fixture: Dutch Tour Friendly
Venue: Eilermark, Glanerbrug, Holland
On Saturday afternoon Dunfermline faced a local amateur select in Dutch border town of Glanerbrug . Only a stones throw away from the World Cup Finals in Germany, Jim Leishman`s selection had an international feel with a Dutch keeper, a Northern Ireland striker and two English triallists.
The team was barely recognisable from that which faced Inverness Caley on the last day of the season. Only Iain Campbell started from the team that faced the highlanders. Triallists Dorus De Vries, John Hardiker, Robbie Foy, Owen Morrison and Neale McDermott gave this Pars side an unusual look.
In the 7th minute Morrison beat off the attempts of three defenders to stop his run to the byeline on the left. The Irishman put in a inviting cross that Freddie DAQUIN diverted into the net from close quarters.
Four minutes later Neale McDermott hit an effort over the cross bar and then when the referee gave Dunfermline a soft decision, adjudging the Dutch select to have made their keeper handle a back pass, an indirect free kick from 15 yards was touched back to Stephen Simmons who drove a low drive onto the left goalpost.
Simmons provided McDermott with another chance in the 21st minute but the former Fulham player blasted wide after controlling the ball well off his chest. Iain Campbell`s progress along the left byeline towards the opposition goal was halted on the edge of the box and McDermott sent the free kick into the danger area but Craig Wilson powered his shot wide right.
Owen Morrison made another good run down the right, beat two players and squared nicely for Simmons but he failed to take the chance missing with a shot to the right of target. On the half hour the second goal which had been threatened, duly arrived off the head of Andy TOD. A Robbie Foy corner on the left was met by the Pars Captain for the day and he directed his header back across the goal to drop in at the left goalpost.
Ten minutes before the interval, MORRISON latched on to a high ball, beat the goalkeeper and then beat the inrushing defender with a neat lift into the left side of the net. Right on half time McDermott accepted a Campbell cross to drive low into the net but his effort was ruled off since the ball had travelled through the legs of Craig Wilson in an illegal position. Very unlucky!
Half Time: Glanerbrug Select 0 Dunfermline 3
Freddie Daquin waltzed passed the Dutch goalkeeper to score Dunfermline`s fourth just five minutes into the second half and then completed his hat trick in the 56th minute nipping on to a through ball and rolling it past the keeper at the far post. The Dutch Amateurs came to life with their first real shot at goal, though it was off target. Then in the 63rd minute they forced Bryn Halliwell to make a good save that won them a corner.
After Dunfermline had committed all six of their substitutes, Scott Morrison provided Mark BURCHILL with the chance to put away number six from an acute angle. Then on 90 minutes a Burchill across the face of goal was returned by Morrison and the Pars striker controlled and picked his spot from 15 yards.
This was hardly a taxing game for Leishman`s troops but it was pleasing to see Freddie Daquin hit the target. The Dutch keeper from Den Haag was very impressive with his commanding shouts but was never tested. Both Owen Morrison and Neale McDermott put in good performances and it will be interesting to see them against Turkish side Rizespor on Monday afternoon at Loenen. Great to see Scott Morrison back and he looked his old self with plenty of pace on the left side of midfield for the last twenty minutes.
