This was a match that the fans wanted to see but in truth the game only rose above mediocrity in short spells. The game started very much in friendly mode with neither side creating any openings. That all changed midway through the first half when Gerry BRITTON grabbed his first goal for the Pars after Dave Beasant failed to hold an Andy Smith drive.
Just three minutes later Southampton equalised courtesy of a brilliantly taken Matt LE TISSIER free kick.
Half Time: Dunfermline 1 Southampton 1
In the second half Southampton looked the stronger side but a goalline clearance from Craig Robertson kept the Pars goal intact. Just as Dunfermline appeared to have weathered the storm, a defensive error by John Clark allowed Saints Neil HEANEY with a straightforward chance which he slotted away to give Saints the lead. 1-2
It looked like that would be the final score but a similar error at the other end gave Andy SMITH an 89th minute opportunity and he made no mistake.
