Dunfermline`s first ever match against the English First Division side proved to be quite a competitive affair with the Mariners fans in the small crowd providing some additional entertainment.
After a promising start by Grimsby, during which Ian Westwater had to be on his toes with two good saves , Dunfermline began to take control. Good running by debutant Gerry Britton was creating problems, but it was Ivo Den Bieman with one of those wicked curling crosses which created the opening for Andy TOD to bullet home a magnificent header in 36 minutes. 1-0
Clive MENDONCA equalised just before half time, somewhat against the run of play.
Half time: Dunfermline 1 Grimsby Town 1
Dunfermline introduced all five substitutes at half time and it was another superb cross ball - this time from Derek Fleming - which allowed Andy SMITH to head home the Pars second. 2-1
SMITH struck again in 70 minutes but Grimsby finished strongly with goals from SOUTHALL and WOODS to make the full time score 3-3.
