Darren Young Post St Mirren
Saturday, 16th Dec 2006It was a surprise when the gaffer asked me to play there. He asked me if I had played there before but he went with that formation today and it has worked out.
Darren Young was told on the Thursday before the match at St Mirren that his return to first team after missing the matches v Kilmarnock and Celtic would be on the left side of the defence. He talked about his new role after the match:-
"It is the first time that I have played there. I did alright because we got a clean sheet. It was a surprise when the gaffer asked me to play there. He asked me if I had played there before but he went with that formation today and it has worked out. Phil has come back in and I've come back in and we managed to get a clean sheet."
Experiments with the formation and rookie left back had given the Manager confidence to go with what even he called an "unorthidox" role for the former Aberdeen captain.
"We worked on it in training and he was happy enough with it to take it into the game today.
"I could maybe have got forward a wee bit more but it was just one of those games. It was a bit of a scrap and we were happy enough to mop up.
"The pitch was very soft; everyone is 'dying' in there but we just have to keep our heads up and keep fighting. We have clawed a point back on Motherwell. We have Inverness at home next week at home; its a big test for us. If we can win our next two games at home we will be back in it."
Darren admitted to be absolutely "knackered" after the match but this is understandable since he has only been fit to train Thursday and Friday. He has not yet been working with the club's latest addition, Sports Scientist, Colm O'Neill.
"It is only one game, we will be able to tell in a few weeks if the new fitness training is going to change results."
