Ash’s ready for Ayr play

Lee Ashcroft recognises that his next opponents, Ayr United, have been ‘flying’ this season and they will not be short of confidence when they come to East End Park.
“We have played them a few times over the last few years and we have had some good results against them so hopefully we can keep that going.”
Recalling the 4-1 defeat at Somerset Park in August, Lee added:-
“I think we are owe them one for the result at the start of the season. I still say that it was probably our worst performance of the year, to be fair. We have looked at footage of them, we know that is going to be a tough game.
“We know ourselves that when you are used to winning it makes it a lot easier. After our last home result we are confident that we can go out, hopefully put in a similar performance and get the better of them.”
Ayr United have only lost two of their sixteen league games and are undefeated since mid October when they lost 2-1 in Dingwall. Lee admitted that the Ayrshire club had surprised a lot of people this season:-
“They have good players, a few ex players from here so you know that they have good quality in their team. They have started the season great and they have just kept that going.
“Ayr have just picked up result after result. Hopefully we can put an end to that at that weekend and we can go on a run like they did.”
With 18 league goals no other player in Scottish football has scored more than Lawrence Shankland. Lee has noted how his opponent has been banging in the goals:-
“Everything seems to be falling at his feet, you need to be in the right place at the right time and luck seems to be with him. I have looked at the videos and a lot of his goals are similar.
“When a player is high in confidence, it is a big thing in football. Hopefully we can start the game well and isolate him out of game. Hopefully our forward boys can hit a few goals like they did the last time at home.
“We need to go out there and make sure that we are at the top of our game. We are taking a bit of confidence into it from our last home game so hopefully we can build on that, get a similar performance and a similar result.”
Lee chipped in with four goals last season but since he has not scored since April, he is still keen to open his account for this season.
“I am frustrated that I have not scored yet. I would never just blame the forwards. Everybody in the team should be chipping in goals. It is not just the forwards that you can blame, it is the full team.
“In the last home game when we got an early goal we went on to win 3-0. In this league I think the first goal if massive in a game. It is very rare that a team comes back from it. Hopefully we get a good start on Saturday, get the fans behind us, get an early goal and get a good result.
“Ayr are full of confidence but if we go and beat them it will give us all the confidence in the world to push on and pick up better results.”
