No leeway for Football`s frustrations

Sunday, 19th Mar 2017

"It was just one of those days when it did not happen for us."

Lee Ashcroft was disappointed to lose on Saturday especially since he felt that Dunfermline had not been put under significant pressure during the game. Lee told the media:-

"It was one of those games where I don`t think there were many clear cut chances. The chances in the game were mainly ours. Obviously they did well to steal the goal at the corner and I still don`t know how it went in to be honest.

"It went through legs and somehow ended up in the bottom corner. That was early in the second half and still think there was time to come back. We are on a good run just now, we have not lost many games recently and I thought it was just a matter of time before we scored. It was just one of those days when it did not happen for us."

At half time the Pars dressing room was confident that they would score revealed Lee. Had Michael Moffat`s shot ten seconds into the second half not been tipped over the crossbar by Ayr keeper Greg Fleming then that would have been correct. Unfortunately it was Ayr who got the goal in 49 minutes. Lee added:-

"Football doesn`t work like that, you need to get the ball in the back of the net and if you don`t, things can go against you and that`s what happened. Even at 1-0 down we had time to come back and even get the draw but nothing went for us."

The centre back told how the fans` frustrations were felt on the pitch as well and he understands why that is.

"Fans are just the same as you, they just want that goal. It was a frustrating day for everybody and it wasn`t good enough for us. We need to do better with the chances we get. If we could have scored that first goal we would have gone on and won the game comfortably. We paid the penalty for not doing that."

Lee Ashcroft has had several partners this season in the centre of the back four - Ben Richards-Everton, Callum Fordyce, Lewis Martin - and feels that he is benefitting from playing alongside an experienced player like his current partner Callum Morris.

"Cal has arrived from a great club like Aberdeen and played with Dundee United. He has been excellent since he came in and I feel that we have formed a good partnership."

Having played the teams in tenth and then ninth Dunfermline have not found these matches as easy to win points from as some might have expected. Lee continued:-

"I have been in that position myself. You always go out with that bit extra because you are fighting for your life. You need to go out and get points on the board. To be fair to them that is what they did. They dug in and got the performance.

"Even at St Mirren, it was a tough game and we never took our chances last week either. The week before that we scored five, that`s just the way football goes I suppose. It just wasn`t good enough against Ayr though.

"We need to pick ourselves up and go again at Morton next week which is going to be an even harder game."

The Greenock club will not want to slip up against the Pars and will want to take full points ahead of their midweek visit to play Hibs in the capital. The match could be more open and Lee agreed that could suit the Fifers.
