McGregor still waiting to score

Thursday, 3rd Dec 2009

"It was not one of our best performances but we showed that we can battle and you don't need to play pretty to win every game.

Queen of the South v Dunfermline

Neil McGregor has made 18 starts for Dunfermline since joining at the start of the season but he is yet to score a goal. He is always long odds to score on the Watson's coupon but after being wrongly credited with the Pars first goal on Tuesday night the big central defender had to own up:-

"I never scored it, it was big Baynee. There was just a scramble in the box and I got my foot to the ball and it ended up at Baynee's feet for a poke into the corner."

The 24 year old was very amused that he was announced for the goal but ultimately he was not worried who had hit the net:-

"It was a great victory to come down here and get a result especially after they turned us over at home. It was nice to get revenge."

The match against Queen of the South did not start too well for Dunfermline when David Weatherston put the home side into the lead. The Pars showed great character to come back to win from a goal down in their second successive away game:-

"The gaffer said that it has been a long time since that happened and he praised the character with every one getting dug in for each other. It is showing on the park."

Neil took a knock on his right ankle towards the end of the first half but played on until midway through the second half:-

"I tried to run it off but the park was getting a lot heavier and my ankle was stiffening up. Trying to pass the ball was just making it worse."

The defence were under intense pressure by the time Chris Higgins replaced his former Clyde team mate and Neil watched the final quarter of the match from the dugout:-

"It was not one of our best performances but we showed that we can battle and you don't need to play pretty to win every game. On nights like this in horrible weather when the park is heavy you can't get the ball down and pass it as well as we usually do but we showed that we can battle as well. The last fifteen minutes was backs against the wall stuff but the boys did well."

Neil was brought up in Ayrshire and hopes to have recovered from his ankle injury in time to face Ayr United on Saturday but he needs to take it day by day. He has started every league and Co-operative Insurance Cup match this season but was philosophical about the possibility of missing the trip to Somerset Park:-

"We have got cover there with Chris Higgins and others who can play there. That's what it is about - having a squad. Over the season that's going to tell."
