Greece is the word for Morrison

Tuesday, 23rd Aug 2016

17 year old Stuart Morrison named in Scotland U19 squad

Stuart Morrison was on the number seven bus home from training when he received not one but two text messages asking for his passport details. Now a Stagecoach number seven from the `toon has witnessed many and varied occurrences in its time so why one text from John Potter and then one from Stephen Wright? The answer to what the great demand was all about became clear when he was informed to be quick because Scotland was wanting him!

"I was shocked but when the email came in about half an hour later I was so happy to be in the squad. It was a massive buzz when I got the news."

The former Inverkeithing High School pupil has not been involved at national level before in fact he has barely won representative recognition before. He told this website:-

"I was in the South East Scotland regional trials at under 14 or 15 at Airdrie`s stadium but did not get any further. I couldn`t even get in my Fife Schools team but now I have the call up for Scotland under 19s."

Scot Gemmill had included Stuart in his Scotland Under-19 for the forthcoming friendly matches against Greece. Scotland will warm up for this season’s UEFA European Under-19 Championship qualifying round with two matches in Athens on 3rd and 5th September.

There will be players in the squad who are under contract at Premiership clubs Stoke City, Everton and Chelsea as well as the expected complement from the Old Firm. Stuart continued:-

"When I saw the list I thought they would not know who I am but I knew who they were! It will be good experience for me to be playing with the best boys at this level and the year above."

Greece will be a first for the Pars central defender but he has comfort in that he will know at least one other squad member - PJ Crossan who left Dunfermline for Celtic in the closed season.

Should it work out for Stuart and PJ they will then face Liechtenstein, Israel and qualifying group hosts Andorra in October for a place in the competition’s elite round. This year’s finals will be played in Georgia in July.
