Dom Thomas signs for Dunfermline

Friday, 10th Jan 2020

23 year old former Motherwell midfielder arrives on loan from Kilmarnock.

As Greg Kiltie returned to Kilmarnock the revolving door brought Killie’s 23 year old Dom Thomas to Dunfermline.

The midfielder arrives on loan until the end of the season and manager Stevie Crawford revealed that he was a name that cropped up in the summer:-

“You look at squads and try to work out who with experience is not getting game time at their clubs. Dom had been out on loan at Dumbarton last season, we had watched him several times as one who had been brought to our attention.

“A new manager came in at Kilmarnock and obviously he felt that he was part of things while maybe just a little frustrated.

“Greg Kiltie has now gone back, he enjoyed his time here and I think Kilmarnock are happy with the way that we have dealt with Greg and are obviously going to trust us with one of their players.

“What is good for us is at 23 years of age, Dom has experience of Championship football. I know he was in League One while at Dumbarton last season but he has also played some football in the top league as well.

“His best years are ahead of him. He comes here hungry like Greg was in terms of wanting to do well. If he does well for us there is the possibility of him going back to force his way into Kilmarnock’s plans in the summer.”

Dom was in the Celtic youth system prior to joining Motherwell as a fourteen year old. He made his debut in December 2014 and went on to make a total of 15 appearances in the Premier League that season as well as helping their Development team to lift the Scottish Youth Cup.

Loaned out to Queen of the South in January 2017 Dom made 18 appearances for the Dumfries club before joining Kilmarnock on a three year deal in July 2017. After 13 appearances for Killie further loan deals saw him return to QOS for another 14 games and then last season to Dumbarton where he made 26 appearances, scored 14 goals and earned himself selection for the Dumbarton team of the decade. This season Dom has made 25 appearances for Kilmarnock all bar three from the bench.

Dom Thomas has been capped six times by Scotland at under 21s and made his debut against Estonia in 2017.

Stevie Crawford continued:-

“He is one who certainly caught my eye and anybody you speak to, when he broke in at Motherwell. He has got pace, he is direct, he can play either side and he also had a spell when we were watching him last year at times, playing in the ten position. I don’t see him possibly playing there. That is not to say that he won’t play there.

“I think that he comes at a good age where he has a lot to play for in regards to his future as well. I’m sure that he will have a relationship with Greg Kiltie who will speak highly of how he was treated here as a player.

“As much as we are disappointed that Greg is not going to be with us for the second part of the season, it is great that Dom is coming on board.

“It is exciting because we now have Ethan Ross, Dom and Ryan Dow. That is not to say any of the younger ones cannot compete for places as well, but in those wider areas there is a bit of nous and excitement for the fans to look forward to.”

Dom will be in the squad for the match at Morton. As for any further business during the January transfer window, Stevie replied:-

“That is something that we are looking at. We will keep looking to trying to improve the squad, keep touching base with agents that we trust and people in the game that we trust. If the right fit is there then it is a discussion that I would have with Ross McArthur.”
