Under 19s v Dundee United
Saturday, 2nd Dec 2006Young Pars taught lesson in playing until the end.
DUNFERMLINE 2 DUNDEE UNITED 2
Dunfermline should have won this game comfortably but paid the penalty for relaxing and letting their opponents back into the game. Hamish French`s side went ahead in 9th minute. Kris Maxwell did all the hard work getting a shot in that Matthew Curtis could only block. Charlie BRADSHAW collected the rebound and sent a neat finish from the angle at the right side of the box into the far side of the net.
After quarter of an hour Scott McBride was unlucky as he ran into the United box to connect with a long ball from Derek Howie but his shot cum cross was cleared. Two minutes later the visitors posted a reminder that they were still competing. Johnny Russell made a strong run, breaking from inside his own half to set up Chris Jeffrey. Pars keeper Darren Stewart could not hold the effort but United could not take anything from the resultant corner from the left.
In 18th minute Marco Andreoni saw his shot deflected behind off Neil Fenwick. Stewart`s long throw out six minutes later sent Bradshaw racing up the right and he won a corner from it. When McBride delivered in the corner from the right John McCulloch was unlucky with the chance at the far post.
Next it was Alan McDonough who tested Curtis from a McBride pass that he received, turned and delivered on target but not enough to beat the keeper. A further first half chance created by Bradshaw and McDonough teed up Davie Muir for a blast from the edge of the box but the ball sailed high over the crossbar.
The visitors started the second half the brighter forcing Stewart to save from a corner. Dunfermline worked hard to get back into the game and began to look fairly comfortable.
McBride failed to convert a Gary Leighton cross at the far post and Bradshaw opened up a good chance for McBride but the defence got back.
Maxwell put the United defence under pressure as play swung down the left and Alan McDONOUGH accepted the break to score the second with just eight minutes remaining.
A Muir tackle handed United a lifeline as Marco ANDREONI pulled one back from the penalty spot in 87 minutes and then deep into injury time a Scott Paterson corner was headed home by RUSSELL. Every credit goes to the Dundee team for their never-say-die attitude.
